As part of the development of international cooperation and the integration of Kazakhstan’s higher education into the global academic space, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Arizona State University (USA) and M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University. The agreement aims to establish a strategic academic partnership, introduce world-class educational programmes in Kazakhstan, develop joint scientific research and increase academic mobility for students and faculty members.
The signing ceremony was held during the official visit of the President of Kazakhstan to the United States. Darkhan Ahmed-Zaki, Rector of M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, and Julia Rosen, Vice President for Global Academic Initiatives at Arizona State University, signed the document.
What opportunities does this partnership offer Kazakhstan?
International Dual Degree Programme (3+1 format): Students will study for three years in Kazakhstan and one year at ASU in the USA. Upon completion, they will receive two diplomas — one from M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University and one from Arizona State University — in Computer Science/Informatics.
Honours College supported by ASU:
For the first time in Kazakhstan, an advanced academic college based on the American model will be established, offering programmes for talented students, research projects and leadership development initiatives.
Government support and scholarships:
The programme will be government-supported and include scholarship opportunities.
Scientific cooperation and technology development: The parties have agreed to conduct joint research and faculty internships, as well as exchanging expertise in digital education, engineering, management, ecology and artificial intelligence.
“Signing this agreement with ASU is a historic milestone for our university and the entire higher education system of Kazakhstan,”said Rector Darkhan Akhmed-Zaki.”We are implementing American educational standards, launching the Honors College, and introducing the 3+1 dual-degree programme. Our students will have access to world-class education without having to leave their home country.”
'We are delighted to open a new chapter of collaboration with Kazakhstan,' said Julia Rosen, Vice President for Global Academic Initiatives at the ASU Office of the Provost. 'We believe that joint educational programmes, research and academic mobility will serve as a bridge between the United States and Central Asia, creating real opportunities for students and educators.”
Representatives from M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University and Arizona State University confirmed that the implementation of the agreement would proceed in phases, involving transparency and close cooperation with the academic community, students and international partners.
