Auezov University Vice-Rector took part in the international panel discussion «Sustainable Campuses: Engaging BRICS Universities in the Climate Agenda»

On October 30, 2025, Saint Petersburg hosted a panel discussion titled «Sustainable Campuses: Engaging BRICS Universities in the Climate Agenda», which focused on key directions for developing “green” universities and the role of higher education in promoting the principles of sustainable development.
The event brought together representatives of leading BRICS universities and experts in ecology, sustainable development, and social responsibility.
Auezov University was represented at the international platform by Gani Abzelbekuly Besbaev, Member of the Board and Vice-Rector for Social and Educational Affairs.
In his speech, Mr. Besbaev emphasized that Auezov University is actively integrating environmental principles into the educational process, developing initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, and fostering a culture of sustainable living among students and staff. He noted that the university views its campus not only as a place of learning but also as a living laboratory for sustainable development, where projects on energy efficiency, waste management, and greening of territories are implemented.
The discussion gathered experts from Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), Lomonosov Moscow State University, Voronezh State University of Forestry and Technologies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Vellore Institute of Technology (India).
Participants discussed joint approaches to reducing the carbon footprint of BRICS university campuses, introducing “green” infrastructure technologies, developing partnerships with municipalities and businesses, and promoting international initiatives such as UI GreenMetric and ISCN.
Participation of Auezov University in this session became another important step toward strengthening the university’s international cooperation in sustainable development and reaffirming Kazakhstan’s commitment to the global climate agenda.
