Seminar on "Enhancing Media Literacy and Improving Professional Skills in the Media Sector" was held in Shymkent

A seminar titled "Enhancing Media Literacy and Improving Professional Skills in the Media Sector" was held today at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University. It was organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Akimat of Shymkent and the university itself.
Representatives of regional media outlets, press secretaries of municipal departments, university faculty and students, as well as industry professionals, attended the seminar.
The seminar aimed to promote media literacy among the public, strengthen the professional competencies of journalists in line with modern standards, and create opportunities to combine academic knowledge with practical experience in training future media specialists.
In his opening remarks, Sadibek Beysenbayev, Vice-Rector for Public Relations and Culture and a member of the University Board, encouraged the participants to make the most of the session. He highlighted the university’s achievements in the media and emphasised the importance of systematically training qualified professionals for the media industry.
The seminar covered a range of relevant topics concerning today’s media landscape. Ulzhan Naushabay, Editor-in-Chief of the Aiqaq TV channel and newspaper, spoke about the role of specialised journalism in a competitive market and the specifics of producing high-quality content. She also shared her professional experience of building industry connections. Professor Bolatbek Tileuberdiyev, Doctor of Philology and faculty member at M. Auezov University, presented a report on language culture in modern Kazakh-language media. Using concrete examples, he addressed common linguistic errors and highlighted the importance of terminological consistency and effective vocabulary usage in improving the quality of translated content. He also emphasised that preserving linguistic standards in journalism is a key indicator of information quality. His presentation sparked active interest and discussion among attendees.
One of the central topics of the seminar was "Modern Media and Journalistic Ethics'" Zhanibek Nurush, Editor-in-Chief of the online journal Beinepro, discussed the challenges that journalists face in the digital age. He spoke about the importance of adhering to ethical codes, methods for identifying misinformation and the importance of copyright protection. He illustrated his points with practical examples and offered strategies for enhancing responsibility and trust in the media environment.
Another highlight was the presentation by Sagyndyk Zhanysbai, an international journalist and the Director and Editor-in-Chief of the JSK.KZ Information Agency. He shared his experience of using artificial intelligence technologies in journalism, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of these new tools.
At the end of the event, participants — including students — took part in an active Q&A session, receiving in-depth responses from the speakers. The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to share experiences and discuss key trends shaping the media industry.
