International Online Briefing Held “Universities and Sustainable Development: Practice, Perspectives, and Effectiveness Criteria”

On January 20, 2026, an international online briefing titled “Universities and Sustainable Development: Practice, Perspectives, and Effectiveness Criteria” was held at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University. The event brought together over 245 leading experts from 41 countries, including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Finland, Malaysia, India, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and others.
The primary objective of the briefing was to establish an international platform for open dialogue and the exchange of experience on the integration of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) principles into higher education systems, academic research, and the institutional governance of universities.
The opening ceremony featured a welcome address by Darkhan Akhmed-Zaki, Member of the Board and Rector of M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University. He emphasised the relevance of the briefing topic and wished the participants productive work. The event also featured a keynote speech by Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Honorary Professor of the University, Rae Kwon Chung, entitled "The University in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and the Climate Crisis", in which he highlighted pressing issues facing today's science and education.
During the briefing, leading scholars and experts discussed the following topics:
The role of universities in advancing sustainable development in the context of international QS rankings;
Current global trends in higher education;
The core principles of Education for Sustainable Development and ways to integrate them into university education policies;
The importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators for the sustainable development of universities.
University faculty members also actively participated in the briefing, presenting and discussing their research results alongside international experts. Presentations were delivered by:
- Associate Professor Ainur Yesbolova on “Household-Based Cooperative Models for Sustainable Development in agriculture”;
- Candidate of Chemical Sciences Botagoz Mutaliyeva from the Department of Biotechnology on “Microencapsulation of Biological Agents for Next-Generation Biofertilizers”;
- PhD Aziza Issa on “Bactericidal and Zeolite Filters for Water Purification”;
- PhD, Associate Professor Ainur Zhorabekova on “The Role of Digital Adaptive Learning in Training Future Foreign Language Teachers”;
- Associate Professor Azret Shingisov and Senior Lecturer Gaukhar Mukhtarova on “The Development of Biodegradable Packaging from Wheat Straw”.
Furthermore, the international experts highly praised Auezov University's institutional experience in sustainable development and noted its strong level of cooperation with foreign higher education institutions.
This international online briefing brought together scholars from different countries and made a significant contribution to the promotion of sustainable development in higher education and the advancement of ESG principles in education and science, as well as strengthening international cooperation.
