A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today between M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University and the Korean company "Hyun" LLP to initiate joint cooperation on the "Smart Green Farm" project. The event was attended by a Korean delegation, university faculty members and representatives of local companies.
"Science in Kazakhstan is receiving increased attention with the strong support of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Our researchers are stepping up and working with international partners to bring innovative scientific ideas to life. Two years ago, Professor Rae Kwon Chung proposed a concept to develop agriculture by harnessing green energy. This year, with the support of investment, we are turning this idea into reality by building a smart farm with cutting-edge technologies right here at our university," said Darhan Ahmed-Zaki, Chairman of the Board and Rector of Auezov University.
The smart farm will grow produce without the use of pesticides or chemicals, while reducing water consumption by up to 90%.
Following the signing of the agreement, a capsule laying ceremony was held to mark the start of the farm's construction. The site will be used to grow green cotton, wasabi and strawberries. Professor Chung highlighted the unique qualities of green cotton, noting that prestigious global brands such as Louis Vuitton have already shown interest in its premium quality.
Construction is expected to be completed within two months. The Korean side will provide all the necessary equipment - including SmartFarm, aquaponics and WindTower systems - free of charge.
It is important to note that the farm will be powered by solar and wind energy, which scientists see as a promising alternative to meet the challenges of climate change
