Hungarian delegation led by the Mayor of Debrecen visits Mukhtar Auezov university

Mukhtar Auezov South Kazakhstan Research University welcomed an official Hungarian delegation led by the Mayor of Debrecen, László Papp. The visit took place as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Kazakhstan-Hungary relations and followed the agreements reached the previous day on establishing sister-city ties between Shymkent and Debrecen.
The delegation was received by Mukhtar Tolegen, Chairman of the Board and Rector of the University. The meeting was also attended by Professor Károly Pető, Vice-Rector of the University of Debrecen, along with representatives of the leadership and academic communities of both universities.
Welcoming the guests, Rector Mukhtar Tolegen emphasized the special significance of the historical and cultural ties between Kazakhstan and Hungary, rooted in shared traditions and heritage. He noted that the establishment of sister-city relations between Shymkent and Debrecen opens new opportunities for direct cooperation in education, research, and the development of highly qualified professionals.
Particular attention during the discussions was given to strengthening cooperation between the two universities. The parties explored opportunities to develop joint and dual-degree academic programs, expand academic mobility for students and faculty members, and implement collaborative research projects.
Priority areas of cooperation included history and the study of shared cultural heritage, agricultural sciences, chemical engineering, law, and interdisciplinary research. The discussions also addressed opportunities for joint supervision of doctoral students, co-authored publications in international scientific journals, and participation in international research consortia, including those supported under the Horizon Europe programme. Representatives of the University of Debrecen presented their institution’s academic and research capabilities to their Kazakhstani counterparts. The working discussions revealed significant similarities between several academic programs and research areas at the two universities, providing a strong foundation for the development of concrete joint initiatives.
An important outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Letter of Intent aimed at fostering long-term academic and scientific cooperation between the two universities. During the visit, the Hungarian delegation also paid tribute to Mukhtar Auezov, the distinguished Kazakh writer, scholar, and public figure after whom the University is named, by laying flowers at his monument.
The visit of the Hungarian delegation marked an important step towards strengthening academic ties between Kazakhstan and Hungary and laid the groundwork for the practical implementation of joint initiatives. The agreements reached are expected to give new momentum to the partnership between Shymkent and Debrecen by bringing together the educational and research potential of both cities.
