Students at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University participated in the national eco-hour "Save Water – Preserve the Future"

Today, M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University hosted the national Eco-Hour event, which was initiated by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and organised by the Department of Water Resources, Land Use and Agrotechnology. This environmental event brought together representatives from the Ministry, the Republican State Enterprise 'Kazvodkhoz', the National Hydrogeological Service 'Kazhydrogeology', and university faculty members, as well as over 400 students.
Gani Besbayev, Vice-Rector for Social and Educational Work, addressed the regional water situation, highlighting the pivotal role of universities in addressing these challenges:
'A university is more than just a place to train specialists. It is an environment that fosters scientific thinking, professional responsibility, and environmental awareness. Today's students will become tomorrow's agronomists, engineers, hydrologists, ecologists, land managers, and public servants. Therefore, a culture of water conservation must become an integral part of their professional outlook." Furthermore, our university places a strong emphasis on training highly qualified specialists for the water sector,' he noted.
Kurman Galym Polatuly, Director of the Strategic Development Department at the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, delivered a report titled The Importance of Information, Awareness, and Ideological Work in Fostering a Water Conservation Culture. He outlined the Ministry's specific initiatives implemented across the country, detailing the digitalisation of agriculture, the concreting of water channels, and government subsidies allocated to farmers adopting drip irrigation technologies.
The speaker also emphasised that water conservation extends beyond large-scale industrial projects, encouraging young people to adopt responsible and efficient water consumption habits at home through everyday examples.
The event featured extensive discussions on developing a water conservation mindset, managing water reserves in times of scarcity and implementing mechanisms to minimise water loss.
Associate Professor N. Dzharbolov from the Department of Water Resources, Land Use and Agrotechnology delivered a report on 'Algorithms for Reducing Water Loss', while B. Yerkebay, a first-year student on the 6B08610 'Water Resources and Water Use' degree program, presented an aquaponics project. During the Q&A session, students received detailed responses to their questions.
At the end of the event, Gulmira Kenzhaliyeva, Head of the Department of Water Resources, Land Use, and Agrotechnology, presented letters of appreciation from N. Nurzhigitov, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, to active scientists and young leaders in the field.
