mTOR signaling in growth and metabolism

     The penultimate session of the Nobel Lectures Week, held in April, the month of science and technology, was held under this name.

     Today, April 16, 2021, a lecture on medicine “ mTOR signaling in growth and metabolism” was held by the famous American-Swiss biochemist and molecular biologist - Michael Hall - winner of the Breakthrough Prize in medicine 2014.

     The lecture was devoted to the intracellular signaling pathway, the central components of which are the enzymes phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), AKT kinase and mTOR.

     Students, teaching staff and scientists from M. Auezov SKU took an active part in this lecture. They asked questions of interest such: mTOR is responsible for preventing apoptosis, growth, cell proliferation, and metabolism. However, this signaling pathway is thought to have several tissue-specific functions. What exactly might these features affect? A question was also asked to a molecular biologist if he believes that vaccination against COVID-19 is a panacea for the disease or the body will be able to cope with this disease on its own?

    The lecturer answered all the many-sided questions and at the end of the session wished everyone good health and success in their work!

    And we have ahead of us the last session of the Nobel Lecture Week on the topic “X-ray crystallography, cryoemission and structural biology: Historical moments” - from the 2002 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Kurt Wüthrich.
