First Congress of Kazakhstani Mathematicians Opens at Auezov University

Leading Kazakhstani and international mathematicians gathered in Shymkent to discuss important issues in science and education. Attendees included Sayasat Nurbek, the Kazakhstani Minister of Science and Higher Education; Bakytzhan Zhumagulov, an academician and the president of both the Turkic World Mathematical Society and the Kazakhstan Mathematical Society; Tynysbek Kalmenov, an academician, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and professor at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan; and Arman Sabitov, the deputy akim of Shymkent.
The congress brought together around 500 participants, including distinguished scholars of mathematics, mechanics and information technology, as well as researchers, international experts, university faculty and school teachers. At the opening of the event, the Minister of Science and Higher Education delivered a congratulatory address to the participants on behalf of Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
In his speech, Sayasat Nurbek noted that the fundamental understanding of mathematics is undergoing a radical shift:
"If in the past mathematics was perceived strictly as a branch of science, today it has become the foundation for solutions driving the economy, technology, and governance. Big data, artificial intelligence, digital twins, predictive models — all of these ultimately rely on mathematics. The world has long recognised and embraced this trend. The focus is also gradually shifting; it is no longer enough to simply apply artificial intelligence; we must deeply understand how it works," he said.
Rae Kwon Chung, Nobel Laureate and Honorary Professor at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, also attended the congress and emphasised the crucial role of mathematics in advancing the green economy.
Academician Bakytzhan Zhumagulov said that the congress would focus on important issues, such as developing mathematical sciences, improving the quality of scientific research, increasing international academic collaboration and updating educational curricula in universities and schools.
Academician Tynysbek Kalmenov, a leading figure in Kazakhstani mathematical science, highlighted the significant progress being made in this field in Kazakhstan, with domestic researchers achieving impressive results on the international stage. He also emphasised the importance of advancing mathematical research and supporting young scholars.
Darkhan Akhmed-Zaki, the rector of Auezov University and chairman of the board, presented a report on the university's recent achievements, international partnerships, ongoing projects under the 'AI-Sana' initiative, and innovative artificial intelligence developments. He outlined the institution's strategic plans for advancing research, improving educational quality and increasing its global recognition.
The congress, hosted on the campus of Auezov University, consists of six international scientific conferences where researchers will discuss current mathematical topics in specialised sections. The event runs from 3 to 7 April.
