"ECOLAB" Environmental Laboratory Officially Opened

Air pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing humanity. A significant step towards addressing this issue has been taken at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University with the launch of an autonomous urban environmental laboratory.
The EcoLab laboratory was opened as part of the research project 'Development of Innovative Technology for Eco-Construction Modules for Local Urban Environment Sanitation', funded by a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Aisulu Abduova, Head of the Ecology Department, is leading the project.
The laboratory is designed to resemble a traditional Kazakh yurt and is constructed from eco-friendly materials. It is equipped with a hydroponic system, air-purifying phyto-filters, solar panels, a weather station and various sensors. The project's primary goal is to improve environmental health in urbanised regions. As well as detecting heavy metal content, the laboratory conducts research on environmental disinfection and decontamination. Our scientists, doctoral candidates, master's students and undergraduates will carry out research here," said Aisulu Abduova.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has previously emphasised the importance of implementing digital systems to conserve water. In line with this, Gulsim Nurlybek, a student in the Department of Ecology, said that she will use the lab's facilities to study and propagate plants using water-efficient technologies.
This project aims to improve urban air quality and protect the environment. Once implemented, it is expected to reduce local PM2.5 particulate concentrations by 20–30%. It is also anticipated that it will improve the urban microclimate by lowering ambient air temperatures by 1–2°C. The project will contribute to the expansion of urban green spaces, creating favourable, eco-friendly public areas for residents. A key feature of the project is its integrated system combining ecological devices, modern technology and urban planning concepts. Furthermore, it enables real-time environmental monitoring through digital tracking. Designed specifically for Kazakhstan’s arid climate, the project has strong potential for implementation in many cities nationwide.
