History of the Department of Ecology

     In 1973, the Ministry of Higher Education of the Kazakh USSR decided to train engineers in natural water treatment technology and industrial emissions at KazChTU. In the same year, the first enrollment of students for the specialty 1217 was carried out as part of the Department of Technology of Inorganic Substances.

        In 1977, an independent department of "Technology of natural and wastewater treatment" was established, which was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Moldabekov Sh. M. The department was staffed by specialists - graduates of the faculties of «Water Supply and Sewerage» engineering and construction universities of the country: Novosibirsk (V.I.Zrazhevskaya), Moscow (Dzhanabaev N.S.), Leningradsky (Nurumbetov N.S. and Kamshybaev A.A.), Ust-Kamenogorsk Road Construction Institute (Dergachev P.P. and Egorova O.V.). Candidates of sciences came to work at the department Kozhevnikova G.I., Prusova V.N., Navesov Sh.A., Besterikov U.B. Umarova Zh.A., Sermanizov S.S. and others.          The first graduation of natural and wastewater treatment engineers took place in 1978.

        In 1980, the department was renamed to «Rational use of water resources and industrial wastewater disposal» During this period, our department was the only specialized department in the entire region of Southern Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Contracts for the training of specialists were signed with 50 enterprises. For 12 years, the department has trained 17 specialists annually under a cooperative agreement for the Uzbek and Kyrgyz USSR.

      In 1989, the Department of Industrial Ecology and Environmental Protection was established on the basis of the RIVR and OPS Department and the training of additional environmental engineers began in specialty 25.13 – «Environmental Protection and rational use of natural resources» in two specializations: "Rational use and protection of water resources" and "Industrial Ecology and rational use of natural resources".

   The department fulfilled a direct contract for the training of specialists in specialties 2908 and 2513 for the Karakalpak Department for the Integrated Use and Protection of Water Resources. Since 1999, the department has been called "Life Safety and Ecology", and has trained environmental engineers in the specialty 1703 - "Applied Ecology" in the state and Russian languages. In 2006, the department was divided into two departments: the Department of Ecology and LS and EP. In September 2010, the departments of Ecology and Geography were merged under the name Geoecology and Environmental Management, and since August 2014 it has been renamed the Department of Ecology. At the moment, the department trains bachelors in the specialty: 5B060800 - "Ecology", and masters in the specialty: 6M060800 – "Ecology".

   The foundations of the scientific direction of the department were laid by the following scientists: laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Moldabekov Sh.M. Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Shakirov B.S., corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Sataev M.I., Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Bakhov J.K. They are outstanding figures in the field of science and play an important role in the scientific space of the country, at the same time they have educated not a single generation of scientific personnel in Kazakhstan.

    In addition, it should be noted the teaching and support staff - Gavrilenko Nina Sergeevna, Dalman Lyudmila, Tokseitova Guldana Moldalievna, who made a huge contribution to the processes of laboratory and practical work.

 Educational and methodical work of the department

    The work of the Committee on innovative teaching technologies and methodological support of the Ecology Department is conducted in accordance with the individual plan of teachers, the annual plan of educational and methodological work of the Department and the Higher School of Economics. Educational and methodological documents are discussed at the following meeting: the department, the methodological committee of the Higher School, the University's Management Committee and, if they are approved, they are approved by the Vice-rector for Academic and Methodological Work.
          All disciplines taught at the department are provided with appropriate curricula compiled by the faculty of the departments. Due to the changes for the 2022-2023 academic year, the forms of the discipline's curriculum have been revised and curricula have been developed in accordance with the requirements of the PR QMS UCU 7.03-2015. The curricula were reviewed at a meeting of the department, at a meeting of the Committee for Innovative teaching Technologies and methodological support of the Chu "Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology" on June 31, 2024 (Protocol No. 1) and approved at a meeting of the UMK of the M. Auezov Law University. The necessary educational and methodological literature is available in all the studied disciplines of educational programs.
      The disciplines conducted in the state language have a sufficient supply of literature.

  Students of the Ecology Department of the M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University Seitkhan Aiganym and Genghis Janel, as well as Professor of the Department of Ecology Iztleuov Gani, took part in a meeting within the framework of the Green metrics student leaders meetings in Bukhara, Republic of Uzbekistan.

Scientific research work of the Department of Ecology 

    At the department "Ecology" the research work of students is conducted under the guidance of professors and teachers in accordance with the generally accepted research plan of the department. The department has a scientific circle "Ecos". Every year, the results of more than 40 scientific research papers are discussed in this circle, reports with the best results are presented at faculty and university conferences, and diplomas are awarded. Students actively participate in scientific conferences held in the countries of the near and far abroad. Over the last academic year, more than 30 scientific papers of students have been published in the form of articles. Students' research work is a major part of higher education and an effective way to improve the quality of specialist training. Students' research work should be aimed at developing students' research skills, developing creative initiatives at the level of a researcher (scientist), manager (manager), practitioner, and putting into practice the achievements of the scientific and technical process in accordance with the requirements of modern specialist training.

 
International project

Chairman of the Management Board-Rector of SKU M. Auezova Daria Perneshovna Kozhamzharova signed an agreement on the international project GE2506 "Bactericidal and zeolite filters for purification and disinfection of drinking water", which is attended by countries such as Georgia, Armenia and Kazakhstan, years of implementation -2022-2024. The grant is provided by ISTC, and the financing is provided by Japan. The project manager is N.O. Dzhakipbekova, the project participants are associate professors and teachers of the departments of Ecology, Chemistry, Oil Refining and Petrochemistry. The agreement was also signed by the Rector of Tbilisi State University, Georgy Sharvashidze, and the rector of the Armenian National Agrarian University, Vardan Urutyan. The project's collaborators include the USA, Japan, Sweden, Australia, Greece, and Bulgaria. We wish the project participants fruitful work!

 

INNOVATIVE PROJECTS

     The National Conservation Initiative Corporate Foundation, together with the Nazarbayev University Office for Sustainable Development, is implementing the Sustainability Living Lab program, sponsored by Chevron Munaigas Inc., aimed at implementing research and innovation projects on sustainable development on campus. Students, professors and University staff (the project budget should not exceed 1,200 thousand tenge, including taxes and other payments to the budget). This Year, students of the University named after For the first time, Auezova participated and 6 projects were presented, one of which became the winner: a project prepared by Ilesova Azada, a student of the HT-21-4k Ecofilter group, and Abduova Aisulu, a research supervisor.

Participation in scientific research is an in-depth study of a professional discipline, the expansion of their scientific, technical and social worldview, self-improvement of new ideas, adaptation to the rapid and effective flow of scientific information. The main purpose of the student's research is:
- To create skills for creative and professional thinking, the formation of scientific approaches to cognitive and research activities,
- Ensuring unified education (teaching and learning), science and practical processes Every student has the right to participate in creative personality, scientific research and scientific creativity competitions and to form a full-fledged participation in goals and opportunities, legal, economic, organizational, etc. creating conditions for growth and development.
The main objectives of the R&D are:
- formation of a system of scientific knowledge for students, formation of a system of thinking, adaptation to skills and approaches (within the framework of unified educational and scientific processes);
- to acquaint students with the methods of scientific research, the practice of theory and decision-making,
- develop independent decision-making skills on scientific and practical tasks
- work in a research team and organize work on
- student creativity, self-education, the need to constantly improve their knowledge in order to teach scientific knowledge and a creative approach to deepening the material ;
- domestic and foreign literature on regular work and skills, the ability to work with patent funds.

International project

 

     From October 13 to October 15, 2025, the head of the department, A.A.  Abduova, and the faculty of the Department of Ecology made a working visit to the Mirzo Ulugbek National University of Uzbekistan.
     During the visit, a meeting was held with the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Raima Shirinova. During the negotiations, issues of strengthening cooperation between universities were discussed, including agreements on the implementation of academic mobility programs for teachers and students.
     The staff of the Ecology Department also gave lectures to students of the National University of Uzbekistan, exchanged experiences in the field of environmental education, scientific research and innovative approaches to solving environmental problems.
      In addition, negotiations were held between the Department of Ecology and the leadership of the Faculty of the National University of Uzbekistan on attracting foreign consultants for undergraduates and doctoral students, as well as on expanding joint research projects and strengthening academic ties between universities.

Auezov, Lyceum school №7 named after K. Spataev, college "Otyrar", Lyceum school №24 named after S. Yerubayeva, secondary school №33 named after K. Kasymula, secondary school №63.

     October 1, the Day of Employees of Higher Educational Institutions, was solemnly celebrated at the Department of Ecology. During the event, the fruitful work of teachers and staff of the department in the field of education and science was highlighted. The head of the department made a congratulatory speech, highly appreciating the contribution of the team to educational, methodological, research and educational work.

       As part of the festive event, letters of thanks and warm wishes were presented to a number of employees. The staff of the department expressed sincere words of appreciation to each other, emphasizing the importance of professional unity and cohesion. The event was held in a cheerful atmosphere and helped to strengthen the team spirit.

  Professor of the department G.M.Iztleuov, as part of a scientific group, made a worldwide discovery - one of the most durable metals, titanium, was chemically split. The essence of the discovery is the dissolution at room temperature of various titanium parts - industrial waste to obtain the sought-after titanium compounds. The authors of the work were awarded medals and diplomas.

6B05210-Ecology
       The purpose of speciality is to train specialists who are able to analyze the state of nature and natural resources, possess effective methods of environmental expertise, and are also in demand in the field of environmental protection.
     Highly qualified teaching staff, doctors, candidates of sciences with extensive experience in scientific, teaching and industrial activities are involved in the educational process of the department.

The field of professional activity

The graduate is awarded a bachelor's degree in natural sciences in the specialty "6B05210-Ecology". Bachelors in the specialty "6B05210-Ecology" can hold the positions of an environmental engineer, a conservation inspector, a forest crop engineer, a wastewater treatment engineer, an environmental technician, a geoecologist engineer, a geoecologist specialist, an operator for waste processing and sorting in scientific and environmental research institutions, research laboratories, and a pedagogical in the field, as well as in all environmental organizations without presenting work experience requirements in accordance with the qualification requirements of the Qualification Directory of Managerial Positions.

  Duration of training

       Full–time - 4 years. During their studies, students who are successful and in good health undergo military training and receive an officer's rank. The training is organized in English.
