The Department of Information and Communication Technologies was established in 2002 on the basis of the Department of Informatics. From 2002 to 2017, the Department of Informatics was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor M.M. Medetbekov. During the period of 2017–2018, the department was led by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Zh.D. Iztaev. Since 2018, the department has been headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Gulzat Turysbekkyzy Dzhusupbekova.
In the 2025–2026 academic year, the academic staff of the department consists of 18 faculty members, including 1 Candidate of Sciences, 3 PhD Associate Professors, 6 Senior Lecturers, and 8 Lecturers.
Senior Lecturer M.M. Turganbekova won a one-year scholarship of the international educational program “Bolashak” and completed a research internship at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (USA) from May 27, 2024 to May 27, 2025.
In addition, Senior Lecturer PhD, Associate Professor G.S. Shaimerdenova and Senior Lecturer A.B. Toktarova were awarded the title “Best University Teacher – 2024”.
The purpose of the course “Information and Communication Technologies” taught at the Department of Informatics is to provide students with basic knowledge, skills, and competencies in creating, transforming, applying, and analyzing information models of real objects and processes, as well as in using information and communication tools for studying other academic disciplines. The program is aimed at developing students’ understanding of the role of information processes in society, the technical capabilities, and the prospects for the use of ICT tools in various fields of human activity.
In the 2024–2025 academic year, the department launched an educational program in the specialty 6B06141 – “Modeling and Creation of Virtual Reality”. The goal of this educational program is to train competitive specialists with modern theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of virtual and augmented reality technologies, capable of designing, modeling, programming, and implementing interactive digital environments in the IT industry, education, medicine, industry, and the gaming sector. The program is focused on developing students’ competencies in 3D graphics, computer modeling, immersive technologies, software development, and user interface design.
Within this educational program, one group consisting of 21 students was formed in the 2024–2025 academic year, and two groups with a total of 28 students were formed in the 2025–2026 academic year. The students are currently continuing their studies.
