We prepare specialists who are able to analyze, predict and develop the economy of the future. Training at the junction of theory and practice with leading experts in the field of finance and business.

The staff of the Department of Economy is represented by experienced, highly qualified teachers with basic education, including 2 Doctors of Economics, 11 Candidates of Economics, 4 PhD, 8 masters. The share of teaching staff with academic degrees and titles is 68%, and full-time teachers is 76%. The average age of the teaching staff is 48.8 years.

The Department of Economics was established in 1964 as part of the Kazakh Chemical-Technological Institute. In the 60s, the tasks of the department were providing engineering and economic personnel for the building materials industry, the construction industry, and the chemical industry of the south of Kazakhstan.

The department trained engineers and economists, many of whom later became specialists in the economic services of large enterprises in the southern region of Kazakhstan, Almaty, Pavlodar, Karaganda, Petropavlovsk, Dzhambul, Uralsk, Tashkent, Navoi, Podolsk, Semiluki and other cities.

From 1976 to 1986, the department staff was significantly replenished with young candidates of science from among the graduates: Nurasheva K.K., Kokebaeva A.M., Syzdykov I.S., Niyazbekova R.K., Kolotaeva L.P., Ikmatova E.B., Shim G.A., Talasov M.Zh., Kuttybaeva D.A. Their training and defense of candidate dissertations was carried out in leading educational and academic institutes, such as S.Orzhonikidze Moscow Institute of Management, P.Tolyatti Leningrad Technological Institute, the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences, etc.

Candidate of Economic Sciences, docent Abubakirova A.A. was the head of the department from the moment the department was formed in 1964 until 1976. Then, in different years, the department was headed by Ishchanov A.U., Nurasheva K.K., Kupeshev Sh.K., Kolotaeva L.P., Niyazbekova R.K., Baineeva P.T., Beisenova M.U., Tulemetova A.S.

The 90s are marked by the fact that many of its graduates joined the departments of the created economic faculty, to prepare specialists in the economic profile, who are in high demand in the labor market. Their development as competent specialists and scientists is the result of the professionalism and dedication of the heads of the department.
The Department of Economics successfully carries out training in educational programs of three levels of education: bachelor's degree 6B04110-Economics, master's degree 7M04110-Economics, 7M04112 - Economics, 7M04113 - Agrarian Economics, 7M04107 - Digital Economy (SU CIS), doctoral program 8D04110 - Economics. The three-level training of personnel is aimed at implementing state programs for technological modernization, innovative entrepreneurship and economic diversification.

Currently, the Department of Economics is headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor Essirkepova A.M.
The department conducts classes in more than 60 disciplines of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs. They are conducted in the state, Russian and English languages.

The department has a high scientific and creative potential. The department employs teachers who at different times became winners of the republican competition "Best University Teacher": Niyazbekova R.K. (2007, 2013), Esirkepova A.M. Many employees and graduates of the department have achieved significant success, received academic titles and degrees, successfully work in their specialty in various positions: from leading specialists to heads of organizations. Some worked and still work today in other departments of higher educational institutions of Shymkent, in economic departments of universities of the republic and other countries as professors, heads of departments and deans of faculties.

It is widely practiced to attract scientists from near and far abroad and leading specialists from industry enterprises to give lectures and conduct scientific consultations.

The important role of the department in organizing the educational process is confirmed by the results of research carried out by its team. The scientific work of currently working teachers is focused on the implementation of research projects, including grant funding, writing monographs, developing textbooks, teaching aids, and supervising the research work of students, master's students, and doctoral students.

In November 2022, the Nobel Laureate Rae Kwon Chung Center for New Climate Economics was opened at the Department of Economics. Research projects and innovative educational programs are being developed together with him. Rae Kwon Chung also shares research experience with the faculty, students, master's students and doctoral students in the field of climate and "green" economics.

At the same time, it should be noted that the Department of Economics has repeatedly won the nomination "Best Department of M. Auezov SKSU", and the educational programs have been accredited by the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (IQAA): OP 6B04110 - Economics in 2022, 7M04110 - Economics, 7M04112 - Economics and 8D04110 - Economics in 2024.

Over the past two years, the following doctoral students of the department have successfully defended their dissertations: Durru O., Mukhan B.S., Khasenova L.A., Mutalieva A., Mukhamedkhanova A.B., Yunusov M.B., Egemberdiev R.A. Many of them have joined the department.

Educational and Methodological Work of the Department of Economics

The educational and methodological work of the Department of Economics is aimed at ensuring a high level of the educational process, improving the content and forms of teaching, introducing innovative technologies, and developing students’ professional competencies.
The main goal of educational and methodological activities is to create an effective methodological system that ensures the training of qualified specialists capable of adapting to modern requirements of the economy and the labor market.
The department actively implements innovative teaching methods focused on developing students’ critical thinking, independence, and analytical skills. Faculty members pay special attention to integrating scientific research into the educational process, which contributes to the formation of students’ research and practical competencies.
The educational and methodological work of the Department of Economics is an essential element of the university’s strategic development, aimed at ensuring high-quality training of future economists, financial analysts, managers, and specialists in public and corporate administration.

In the 2025-2026 academic year, students of OP 6B04110-Economics took an active part in the work of the Poisk circle. Students and faculty of the Department of Economics took an active part in the 27th Republican Student Scientific Conference of the M.Auezov South Kazakhstan University «Vectors of Youth Science Development» in social studies, technical, socio-humanitarian and economic sciences, which will be held on April 5-6, 2025 at the M.Auezov training base. The student scientific conference was attended by students. According to the plan, 22 reports were presented at the conference. On October 31, 2022, the Center for New Climate Economics and Sustainable Development opened at the Department of Economics. The center was named after Nobel Prize laureate Professor Rae Kwon Chung, Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Change.
This is the first institute in Central Asia and the CIS to implement a new model of economic development based on the principles of sustainable development, green technologies and reducing the impact of climate change on the environment. The decision to open it was made during the III Nobel Festival.

Conducting the winter school "Green Economy and Sustainable Development of Regions" in January 2024. In real time, despite the distance and time difference, the department selected a contingent that set the general tone for the discussions on the topics of the winter school. Nobel laureate, Professor Rae Kwon Chung-woo made a presentation on the topic: "Turning Carbon Neutrality into Opportunities for the New Climate Economy of Kazakhstan"; Professor Mustafa Nursoy from Mugla Sitki Kochman University (Turkey) made a presentation on the topic: "The Role and Importance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the Country's Economy"; Professor Mavlut Gul from Isparta University (Turkey) made a presentation on the topic: "Methods of Sustainable Agriculture and their Development in Turkey"; Doctor of Economics, Professor of TashSTU Irisbekova Mavluda Narinbayevna made a presentation on the topic: "Green Economy in Logistics"; Doctor of Economics, Professor of the RUDN University named after P. Lumumba Elena Gennadyevna Popkova presented a report on the topic: "Biodiversity and Food Security". No less interesting were the reports prepared by the staff of the Department of Economics.
 
On October 29, 2024, the delegation visited the Tashkent Economic and Pedagogical Institute, South Kazakhstan State University named after M. Auezov with the aim of expanding the forms of international cooperation of higher educational institutions. Meeting of representatives of organizations of higher and postgraduate education - rectors G. Besbaeva and Sh. Zhanikulova - signed a memorandum on mutual cooperation. As a result, a significant enrichment of the activities of educational organizations, expansion of their interests in the field of science, educational and methodological work, training of personnel, as well as acquaintance with the culture of friendly southern neighbors is expected.

At the Department of “Economy”, professional practice of students is carried out:

The practice-oriented approach of the educational program of the 6B04110 "Economy" in the educational process solves the main task of training future specialists - creating conditions for the development of professional competence of the individual
In order to improve the quality of training of specialists, the development of social partnership, the effectiveness of educational and research work, advanced training of employees of the enterprise and teachers, the Department of Economics operates a educational and scientific(educational) production complex (ESPC). The organization of the activities of the ESPC is carried out on the basis of standard rules for the activities of educational organizations implementing educational programs of higher professional education.
The ESPC promotes the realization of the innovative potential of the department by involving the faculty, undergraduates and students in innovative activities; improves training planning organization of course and diploma works, educational research work of students related to the solution of research and production tasks facing the enterprise.

Over the years of the ESPC functioning, the faculty of the department has established contacts with enterprises and organizations of the Turkestan region and Shymkent city.
In order to involve teachers, specialists, students, undergraduates in the innovative activities of ESPC and improve educational programs, scientific and methodological seminars are regularly held aimed at training and introducing modern training technologies and means of activating the cognitive activity of bachelors and undergraduates. Various software products are used for this.
Teachers in lectures and practical classes use active and interactive teaching methods such as business games, trainings, presentations, round tables, etc. Cases, guidelines for practical exercises, task collections, business games, etc. have been developed for all disciplines.

Educational Work at the Department of Economics

Educational work at the Department of Economics is an integral part of the educational process and is aimed at developing students’ active civic position, high culture, responsibility, diligence, and professional ethics. The main goal of this activity is to promote the harmonious development of the future specialist’s personality, combining professional competence with moral and spiritual values.
The Department of Economics carries out educational activities in accordance with the university’s plan, paying special attention to patriotic, moral, legal, and environmental education. Great importance is attached to fostering in students a sense of love for the Motherland, respect for national traditions, communication culture, and tolerance.
The main forms of educational work include:
  • curatorial hours and individual meetings with students;
  • thematic meetings, round tables, discussions, and workshops;
  • participation in charitable and volunteer activities;
  • organization of excursions, cultural and sports events;
  • conferences and competitions aimed at developing professional and personal qualities.
The department’s faculty actively collaborates with student self-government bodies, curator councils, and other university units, creating conditions for the development of students’ creative and leadership potential.
Educational work at the Department of Economics contributes to the formation of students’ sense of responsibility for the country’s future, readiness for professional activity, and awareness of their social significance in society.
Orientation of First-Year Students with the University

September 1, 2024.The Dean of the Higher School of Management and Business M. Seidakhmetov, Deputy Dean for Academic and Methodological Work B. Kulbay, and Deputy Dean for Social and Educational Work D. B. Abdykulova held an event to introduce first-year students to the university facilities.Students were informed about internal regulations, their rights and responsibilities, the educational process, and the structure of the university.
Heads of departments, advisors, and senior curators of academic groups met with the first-year students, told them about the history of the university and the school, and familiarized them with the academic policy, code of ethics, and student guide.

Familiarization with Internal Regulations and Code of Ethics

Student curators conducted explanatory work on the university’s internal regulations and provisions of the Code of Ethics.They emphasized the obligation of students to maintain and enhance the university’s reputation, follow ethical standards and behavioral norms, and demonstrate mutual respect and honesty.Students must be neatly dressed and maintain discipline. Wearing outer clothing inside academic buildings is prohibited.Talking on the phone and chewing gum during classes and in the library is forbidden, as it violates ethical norms.It was also noted that each student should actively participate in the academic, social, and sports life of the university.

Professional and Labor Education

An event entitled “Dedication to Economists” was held at the university to help first-year students adapt to their chosen field.During the event, students learned about the significance, responsibility, and prospects of the economics profession and felt part of the professional community.Teachers and senior students gave motivational speeches and shared their experiences.
Intellectual games and quizzes were organized, and active participants received awards.At the end of the event, the freshmen solemnly took an oath and made their first step toward becoming professional economists.

Cultural and Educational Work

On April 24, the Department of Economics held a literary event titled “Abai Readings”, dedicated to the 185th anniversary of the great poet and educator Abai Kunanbayev.
The purpose of the event was to popularize Abai’s legacy among youth, foster spiritual and moral values, and promote the state language and national literature.Students and schoolchildren recited Abai’s poems and excerpts from his “Words of Edification”, and presented their own works dedicated to the poet.Presentations on Abai’s philosophical ideas and literary compositions were also held.The event became an important platform for engaging young people with the cultural heritage and spiritual values of the nation.

Fourth-year students of the Department of Economics, together with their curators, actively participated in the traditional job fair “Zhas Maman” (Young Specialist).The purpose of the event was to establish connections between future graduates and employers, provide information about in-demand professions, and assist in employment.Companies presented their vacancies, and students took part in interviews and submitted their resumes.Curators provided recommendations for developing professional competencies and competitiveness in the labor market.

To support talented youth and encourage their activity, a contest titled “Best Student” was held.The contest included several nominations: academic excellence, active participation in research, leadership in public and volunteer activities, and creative talent.

Mission

The main goal of the research activity of the PPS of the department is to develop and support scientific research as the basis for the fundamentalization of education, the basis for the training of qualified labor workers in accordance with the needs of the state and society.

Vision

We teach students under the programs of undergraduate, magistrates and PhD, specializing in market analysis, strategic management and digital economy.

Inspiration

Many employees and graduates of the department have achieved significant success, received scientists and academic degrees, successfully work in the specialty in various positions: from leading specialists to heads of organizations. Some have worked and today work at other departments of higher educational institutions of Shymkent and at the economic departments of other universities of the republic and the CIS as professors, heads of departments and deans of the Higher School.

A brief history of creation

The department of Economy is one of the oldest departments of the Kazakh of Chemical technology Institute, which initially serves technical specialties.

In the 60s, the tasks of the department included providing engineering and economic personnel to the construction materials industry, the construction industry, as well as the chemical industry located in the south of Kazakhstan.

In the Soviet years, the department trained more 500 engineers-economics who became specialists in the economic services of large enterprises in Pavlodar, Karaganda, Petropavlovsk, Dzhambul, Uralsk, Chimkent, Alma-Ata, Navoi, Tashkent, Podolsk, Semiluk and other cities of the all-union distribution of graduates of the department.
