“Waste Reduction: A Clean City and Responsible Consumption”

Today, protecting the environment from the negative impact of industrial and household waste, as well as fostering a culture of responsible consumption, has become one of the most pressing challenges of modern society. In this regard, a curatorial hour entitled “Waste Reduction: A Clean City and Responsible Consumption” was organized by Senior Lecturer of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, Tastanbekova Bayan Omirzakhovna with the participation of the students of group ST-25-3r2 and faculty members of the department.The primary objective of the event was to promote the principles of a Zero Waste lifestyle among students, enhance environmental awareness, and demonstrate effective methods for reducing waste generation in everyday life.During the session, participants discussed the fact that plastic waste may take approximately 400–500 years to decompose in nature and examined the harmful effects of microplastics on human health. As an effective approach to addressing this global environmental issue, students presented the internationally recognized 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
The following key strategies were highlighted:
  • Reduce – minimizing the use of single-use plastic bags and disposable tableware by replacing them with reusable shopping bags and thermal mugs;
  • Reuse – extending the life cycle of products through repeated use or by donating items for charitable purposes instead of discarding them;
  • Recycle – sorting and delivering paper, plastic, and electronic waste to designated collection points for further processing and recycling.
In addition, participants emphasized the importance of digitalizing the educational process as a means of reducing paper consumption. It was noted that maintaining notes and educational materials in electronic format should become a common and sustainable practice.During the event, B.O. Tastanbekova emphasized that waste reduction is not merely about proper waste disposal but also about cultivating a conscious and responsible consumption culture. According to her, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices within the university and student dormitories can contribute significantly to creating a cleaner educational environment and a more responsible society.At the conclusion of the event, participants agreed to introduce new environmentally friendly initiatives and sustainable habits within the university community based on the presentations and discussions delivered during the session. Every conscious action taken toward environmental protection represents a meaningful contribution to sustainable development and the preservation of nature for future generations.
