Debate Session: Artificial Intelligence Platforms
On November 17–18, 2025, MadinaMyrzabekkyzyTurganbekova, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, School of Information Technology and Energy, conducted an interactive lecture session in debate format for 3rd-year students of the Faculty of Philology (groups FI23-1dk, FI23-1k, FI23-5k, FI23-4kr, FI23-3k1, FI23-3k2, FI23-3k3, FI23-1k2, FI24-1ks, FI23-3dr, FI23-3r1, FI23-3r2) on the topic “Benefits and Risks of Artificial Intelligence Platforms.”
The session was designed based on the international research experience the lecturer gained during a scientific internship at the University of Illinois (USA). The aim of this format was to develop students’ critical thinking skills, strengthen their ability to present reasoned arguments, foster teamwork, and analyze the advantages and risks of modern AI platforms.
During the session, students compared the capabilities of contemporary AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude AI, Copilot, and Midjourney, and analyzed their applications in professional, educational, and creative contexts. In addition, students defended their positions on the topic “Are the Benefits Greater than the Risks?” and practiced debate skills, including refuting opposing arguments.
Particular attention was given to ethical and legal issues associated with the use of artificial intelligence. Students discussed norms to follow when working with AI (academic integrity, personal data protection, copyright compliance, plagiarism prevention) as well as legal constraints and potential risks of using digital tools. Practical recommendations were provided for the proper and safe use of AI technologies in academic and professional activities.
The debate format allowed students to:
- analyze diverse perspectives and present well-reasoned arguments;
- work collaboratively in teams with role distribution;
- develop skills in rebuttal and conducting discussions;
- enhance critical thinking and research abilities.
As a result, students not only expanded their knowledge of AI platforms but also gained experience in applying them in professional and research activities. Furthermore, they developed an understanding of the ethical and responsible use of AI technologies and cultivated a conscious approach as future professionals.
